H & H Specialties is pleased to announce these recent improvements to our product lines as well as company updates.

What’s New

At the recent LDI Show in Orlando, Florida, H & H Specialties introduced our new Model 228 B Black Single Carrier.  With the popularity of the urethane-tired wheels for the 400 Series and 500 Series tracks, a new urethane-tired carrier has been developed for the 200 Series.  The urethane tire allows the carrier to roll smoothly and quiet while accommodating a heavier curtain.  This carrier has a recommended working load of 10 pounds.

The 228 Single Carrier and 229 Master Carrier are available for shipment.

No. 451 Really Useful Carrier

At the USITT Stage Expo in Phoenix, Arizona, H & H Specialties introduced our new multi-purpose utility carrier for use with our 400 Series Heavy-Duty Stage Track.  The Really Useful Carrier lives up to it’s name.  Equipped with urethane-tired sealed ball bearing wheels, this carrier has a working load rating of 200 pounds and can be used in a variety of applications for tracking scenery, lighting, and other elements.

USITT Conference Student Scholarships

For many years, H & H Specialties Inc. has made contributions to the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, Inc. (USITT) in support of student attendance at the Annual Conference & Stage Expo.

Again this year, H & H Specialties offered student scholarships to the USITT Conference & Stage Expo, March 19-22, 2008, in Houston, Texas.  Six students who signed up before the Very Early Registration deadline this year had their conference fees returned courtesy of H & H Specialties Inc.  The six were chosen at random from all that sign up before the deadline.  The only qualification is that recipients must have been members of USITT for at least one year.

We congratulate this year's winners: Megan Haven, Stan Morris, Megan E. Myerov, Dana Nelson, Matt Olson and Amanda G. Wray.

The United States Institute of Theatre Technology, Inc. is the association of design, production, and technology professionals in the performing arts and entertainment industry.  For additional information please visit USITT.

Stacking Space Estimator

How much space does it take to stack a curtain?  The H & H Specialties’ Stacking Space Estimator will calculate it for you!  A simple Excel tool is available in the “Products” section of our website.  The estimator will calculate the track hardware stacking space for you once you enter the number of carriers into the spreadsheet.  Note: for heavyweight and lined curtains, additional stacking space will be required to accommodate the density of the fabric(s). This estimator has been revised as of September 2007.

Catalog Fourteen

Catalog Fourteen arrived in October 2006 at LDI 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  After almost two years of development, our new catalog of stage curtain tracks, electric curtain machines, and light duty rigging was completed.  The catalog was expanded to include many new products as well as ongoing revisions to our current product line.

Of special note is the section beginning on page 62 that details recommended track hanger support spacing for each track with respect to various curtain weights. This catalog may be downloaded from the Products section of our website.

The Improved 459 Curtain Machine:

The Model 459 Draw Curtain Machine has been a popular item the past thirty years.  This traction drive curtain machine can be used on very long tracks or where the machine must be located a short vertical distance between it and the curtain track.

Our latest version is a result of requests from many Consultants to provide curtain machines for variable acoustics in theatres and concert halls.  The unit is equipped with a special gear reducer that is filled with synthetic lubricant and sealed for life, therefore, future maintenance is reduced.  The machine base is also designed with an integral drip pan and tension device enclosure/drapery deflector.  For acoustical curtains, we have two popular speeds: 31 and 41 feet per minute.  Other speeds are available, please consult the factory.  We also offer the options of magnetic disc brakes, encoders, variable speed drives, three phase motors, and low voltage DC control circuits.  Unit shown has the optional encoder and three phase motor installed.

We like this design so much that all of our 459 Draw Curtain Machines are now manufactured with these improved features at no added cost.  For machines used with performance curtains we still offer faster operating speeds per our catalog.

Recent Additions to the H & H Specialties Family:

Our latest bundle of joy arrived at H & H Specialties in February 2006.  We have just brought on-line a new Haas SL30 CNC lathe to replace one of our older CNC machines.  Weighing in at 18,000 pounds and 25 feet long, this lathe has the turning capability of 17" diameter x 34" long.  Designed for high-speed production, this machine is complete with bar feed capacity up to 4" diameter and live tooling for secondary milling capabilities which allows additional flexibility in our manufacturing.  The accuracy and finish of the machined parts is astounding.

In June 2005 our new Haas TL 3 Tool Room Lathe arrived to replace three of our manual lathes.  Weighing in at 6,500 pounds and 11 feet long, this machine is capable of both CNC and manual operation.  It’s great for prototyping, short runs, specialty projects, and turning drums 12" diameter x 60" long.

Rope Lock:

Safety is always a concern in the entertainment industry.  With this in mind, H & H Specialties has designed a new rope lock and safety lockout tag.  Our standard 576-9 Rope Lock is designed for use with 3/4" purchase lines (other sizes are also available).  Used in combination, these products guard against the unauthorized use of counterweight sets by fixing the handle in the locked position.  Awarded Honorable Mention, Rigging Product of the Year at LDI 2002.
